Hazard Hunt: 7 Easy Steps to Fall-Proof Your Home Today

For seniors, the home is where most falls occur. Simple changes can drastically reduce the risk of a trip or slip. Turning your home into a safe environment is the first and most effective step in fall prevention.

Your 7-Point Home Safety Checklist:

  1. Clear the Clutter: Remove any objects (magazines, shoes, cables) from walkways and staircases. A clear path is a safe path.
  2. Secure Area Rugs: Use double-sided tape or non-slip backing underneath all area rugs and mats. Better yet, remove small rugs entirely.
  3. Brighten Up: Ensure all areas are well-lit. Use nightlights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms. Place switches near the bed and at the top and bottom of stairs.
  4. Install Grab Bars: Place sturdy grab bars inside and outside the shower or tub, and next to the toilet. Towel racks are not designed to support weight.
  5. Fix Loose Carpeting: Immediately repair or replace frayed or loose sections of carpeting or broken floor tiles.
  6. Use Stair Rails: Ensure railings are installed on both sides of the staircase and are firmly secured.
  7. Keep Cords Tucked Away: Never run power or phone cords across walkways, even temporarily. Use cord covers or secure them along the baseboards.
