Even with the best prevention, falls can happen. Knowing exactly what to do immediately after a fall—whether you are hurt or not—can minimize anxiety and prevent further injury.
Your Post-Fall Action Plan:
- Stay Calm and Assess: Do not try to move immediately. Lie still for a minute and assess if you feel pain, especially in your hips, head, or spine. Wiggling your toes and fingers can check for serious injury.
- Call for Help: If you suspect a serious injury (like a hip fracture) or cannot get up, shout for help or use a personal emergency response system (PERS), if available. Do not attempt to stand until medical help arrives.
- If Able to Get Up Safely: Roll onto your side, then crawl to the nearest sturdy piece of furniture (a chair or couch). Use your arms to push yourself up onto your hands and knees. Place your hands on the furniture.
- Use the Furniture to Rise: Slowly slide one foot forward so it is flat on the floor (like a half-kneeling position). Push up off the furniture, using your arms and the strength of your front leg, until you are standing.
- Notify Your Doctor: Whether you were hurt or not, contact your primary care physician immediately. A fall is a major event and could indicate a new health issue or the need to adjust medications.
